Former MySpace Exec Allen Hurff to Launch SoCal-based Incubator

Submitted by Tim Schulz on September 3, 2009 – Comments

hurff_pic Allen Hurff, former SVP of Engineering at MySpace, will be launching a startup incubator based in Southern California. The news comes from his recently-updated LinkedIn page (image below).

Details on the incubator are cloudy. His title simply reads:

Founder SoCal Incubator (name in the works)“.

And for the company description he writes:

Facilitator of the WebSquared Era
SoCal Incubator (Name Not Disclosed)
Internet industry
July 2009 – Present ( 3 months)

“WebSquared” is a term that has been thrown around as the potential successor to Web 2.0. It is possible that this is also the name of Hurff’s new incubator, especially given the fact that he’s recently reserved a new twitter account under that name: @websquared We’re not sure where Hurff intends to take this new venture, but perhaps he’ll break the news to us or directly or via his blog.

Incubators seem to be all the rave right now and they’re a great source of deal flow for VC firms. Y Combinator has been very successful in the Bay Area, and LaunchBox Digital is very active in Washington D.C. Hurff’s incubator will certainly not be the first in LA. We reported last weekend that LaunchPad LA is now live with a very impressive executive roster (and also now accepting applications for their upcoming class).

Hurff worked at MySpace for 4.5 years before leaving in June. He also served as Chairman & Board Member of the OpenSocial Foundation (disclosure: I’m also a member of the OpenSocial Foundation). He’s not the first former MySpace exec to make traction after leaving. We reported last week that the venture-backed startup led by Kapur, Pearman, and Benedetto may be leveraging Crowdgather to monetize forums. Funny that in both of these cases, we got our news from Twitter or LinkedIn.
