Microsoft was slow to embrace the Internet and slow to provide a platform for smartphones. However they are still a formidable competitor to both Google and Apple. Millions of people still use the Windows operating system on desktops and other platforms; this provides Microsoft with the Trojan horse in the platform battles against Android and iOS.

Microsoft should leverage its current installed based and future installations by providing free, aka subsidized, phones powered by Windows mobile. The benefits would be greater than the cost as adoption and awareness of the Windows powered phones would increase well beyond its current state.
